Benzema almost eliminated Al Ittihad in the AFC Champions League

Striker Karim Benzema scored an own goal, leaving Al Ittihad behind in the 2-1 win over Navbahor in the second leg of the 1/8 round of the AFC Champions League.

Scored: Hamdallah 45’+6, Tabatadze scored 87′ – Benzema scored 25′

After being held to a 0-0 draw by opponent Uzbekistan in the first leg, Al Ittihad encountered difficulties in the second leg when Benzema made a mistake in the 25th minute. From Jamshid Iskanderov’s free kick, the French striker headed home. Goalkeeper Abdullah Al-Mayouf could not react in time when the force of the header was too strong at close range.

After the own goal, Benzema was booed by the home crowd. Saudi Arabian fans lost sympathy with the 36-year-old player when he skipped training and asked to leave in early 2024 despite earning a salary of nearly 200 million USD per year – the second highest in the world.
