Young Sheldon‘s new spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, is finally breaking a 19-year franchise trend, and it’s the key to The Big Bang Theory franchise continuing after the prequel series. The Big Bang Theory franchise has dominated network television for almost two decades – introducing TBBT in 2007 and launching Young Sheldon two years after its conclusion in 2017. Now, after seven seasons, Young Sheldon has come to a decisive end and launched its own spinoff, and the Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage spinoff can do something the other TBBT series could not.
The Young Sheldon finale set up many exciting points for its continuation to explore, even if it won’t feature the Sheldon character. In many ways, the franchise had outgrown its premise as a Sheldon origin story, with some of the best Young Sheldon episodes honing their focus on other family members. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will continue the separation from Sheldon that Young Sheldon started, and as such, it shakes a definitive TBBT trend after almost two decades.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Is The First TBBT Show Not About Sheldon
The Big Bang Theory And Young Sheldon Were Sheldon-Centric
The Young Sheldon spinoff will break ground since Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will be the first TBBT series to abandon Sheldon as its main character. While he didn’t start as the main character of The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parson’s Sheldon came to be centered in the series. Then, of course, Young Sheldon centered around Iain Armitage’s Sheldon character, too. The scope of Young Sheldon expanded to be about the whole family later on. Still, the youthful portrayal of the Sheldon character anchored the Young Sheldon series.
While Sheldon could still turn up in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, the series is in no way centered on his character, and it would be a distraction to include him regularly. Instead, the Young Sheldon spinoff will hone in on Sheldon’s elder brother, Georgie Cooper. Young Sheldon‘s Montana Jordan will reprise his role as the character, and his wife will join him in the series, Emily Osment’s Mandy McAllister. While there are Young Sheldon characters returning in Georgie & Mandy, Sheldon isn’t confirmed as one, meaning the Young Sheldon continuation will effectively move on from the character.
The Big Bang Theory Franchise Needed To Grow Beyond Sheldon
The Franchise Needed To Grow To Survive
The absence of Iain Armitage’s Sheldon in Georgie and Mandy’s sequel marks The Big Bang Theory franchise expanding beyond Sheldon. Since Sheldon’s life story was established on TBBT, and Young Sheldon shows his life before and bits of it after, his story has mostly run its course. It might be interesting to pick back up with the character later, perhaps when Sheldon’s kids are older, but there’s nothing else to do with the character for now. The franchise needed to expand beyond Sheldon to have a longer life and sprout new spinoffs, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will.
